Moira Zoitl (Germany)

Duration: 18′ 40″

Moira Zoitl’s video work, ‘a well spoiled one’ addresses the acquisition of language and the associated cultural learning of migrant children. Zoitl examines language as a system of spoken, gestured, and written symbols which humans use, as members of a social group and as participants in different cultures, to express themselves. The Phoenician alphabet, which is considered the basis of many other alphabets, functions as a chapter-giving element in video work. It is the set common denominator of the artist’s European linguistic background and her daughter’s Indian origin. Many of the Phoenician letter have their origins in images and symbols that refer directly to the human body and its environment.
