Having fled the Liberian civil war, renowned self-taught artist Johnson Weree is seeking asylum in the Netherlands where he lives undocumented and without a fixed address. Haunted by the horrors of his past, he draws bright-coloured otherworldly portraits, whilst longing for a brighter future.

Weree di Tal Amiran (Regno Unito) affronta temi urgenti, quali la migrazione, la richiesta d’asilo e le conseguenze di una guerra civile, dal punto di vista strettamente intimo di un uomo che rievoca le vicissitudini della sua esistenza. In questo, il tema dell’arte entra come mezzo di guarigione, permettendo un insperato superamento della condizione del migrante respinto. Il racconto del successo dei disegni “ultraterreni” dell’artista liberiano Johnson Weree attesta la potenza dell’immaginazione e del talento e crea un forte coinvolgimento emotivo con lo spettatore. Per queste ragioni e per averci ricordato l’universalità dei diritti dell’uomo, gli viene conferito il premio Film sull’Arte nella categoria cortometraggi.
Weree by Tal Amiran (United Kingdom) deals with urgent issues, such as migration, asylum requests and the consequences of a civil war, from the strictly intimate point of view of a man who recalls the vicissitudes of his existence. In this, the theme of art enters as a means of healing, allowing an unexpected overcoming of the condition of the rejected migrant. The story of the success of the ‘otherworldly’ drawings by the Liberian artist Johnson Weree attests to the power of imagination and talent and creates a strong emotional involvement with the viewer. For these reasons and for having reminded us of the universality of human rights, he was awarded the Film sull’Arte prize in the short film category.
