Areas of Search è un cortometraggio di fantascienza ambientato in un mondo alternativo. L’anima di una donna cerca i suoi resti in una città desolata e distrutta dove sembra che tutte le donne siano state assassinate. Sebbene non vediamo l’anima, sentiamo la sua voce parlare a se stessa, ponendo domande come “Dove sono i miei resti?” e “Come si può avere un funerale senza un corpo?” I territori di Google Earth raffigurati in questo film sono luoghi reali in cui sono state recentemente scoperte alcune delle tante donne assassinate in Messico. Questo lavoro approfondisce temi come il femminicidio, la perdita collettiva e il modo in cui il paesaggio documenta e trasmette il trauma di una comunità.
Areas of Search is a short science fiction film set in an alternate world. A woman’s soul searches for her remains in a desolate, broken town where it appears that all the women have been murdered. While we do not see the soul, we hear her voice speaking to herself, asking questions such as, ‘Where are my remains?’ and ‘How can one have a funeral without a body?’ The Google Earth territories depicted in this film are actual locations where some of the many murdered women in Mexico have recently been discovered. This work delves into themes such as femicide, collective loss, and how the landscape documents and conveys the trauma of a community.

Nell’opera di Helen Blejerman, Areas of Search, le immagini (riprese da Google Earth) di un Messico apparentemente
svuotato di presenza umana, scorrono come un tappeto visivo, e fanno da sfondo alla voce (l’artista stessa) di un’anima in cerca dei propri resti, rappresentando così un mondo doppiamente irreale. Lo straniamento è accentuato dal flusso dell’acqua che risale all’incontrario, quasi esprimendo il desiderio di tornare indietro nel tempo, alla vita. Il tema della perdita, individuale e collettiva, attraversa l’opera, così come lo sguardo il paesaggio. Per queste ragioni e per il lirismo compositivo, le viene conferito il premio per la migliore opera di videoarte.
In Helen Blejerman’s work, Areas of Search, the images (taken from Google Earth) of a Mexico apparently emptied of human presence, flow like a visual carpet, and are the background to the voice (the artist herself) of a soul in search of its remains, thus representing a doubly unreal world. The estrangement is accentuated by the flow of water that rises in reverse, almost expressing the desire to go back in time, to life. The theme of loss, individual and collective, runs through the work, as does the gaze on the landscape. For these reasons and for the compositional lyricism, she was awarded the prize for the best video art work.
