Across the border – THE IMAGES OF MIMMO AND FRANCESCO JODICE
Sinossi
It often happens, in art as in the entertainment world, that a craft is passed down from father to son, but it is rare for two generations to achieve the same level of excellence. In the case of Mimmo and Francesco Jodice, however, talent has not been spared. Mimmo is one of the great names in the history of Italian photography. An avant-garde artist since the 1960s, he has been a tireless protagonist in the cultural debate that led to the international success of Italian photography. Francesco's artistic research, on the other hand, addresses the changes in the contemporary social landscape in relation to urban anthropology, proposing a practice of art as a civic poetic.
For the first time, Mimmo and Francesco, father and son, two generations of contemporary Italian photography, dialogue and exchange views on photography, the city, art's social commitment,
and their gaze on a world undergoing profound transformation. Through the anomaly of their corneas, they will allow us to perceive reality with a lateral gaze, going beyond the boundary.
Director's statement
With *Beyond the Boundary: The Images of Mimmo and Francesco Jodice*,
I felt a pressing need to explore a theme that is rarely addressed with the depth it deserves: the generational transition in art. Photography becomes not only a language of expression, but also a forum for dialogue and exchange between two extraordinary figures of Italian culture: a father and a son, Mimmo and Francesco Jodice. What I was interested in portraying was not merely their artistic experience, but the human relationship that underpins and permeates it. The encounter between two worldviews and two ways of understanding photography lies at the heart of the film: on the one hand, Mimmo, deeply rooted in Naples, with a metaphysical vision of the image; on the other, Francesco, who has broken free from his origins to forge an independent identity in the great global metropolises, with a focus on geopolitics, urban transformations and possible futures. The narrative structure is built upon this dialogue, which is not merely a central thread but also a metatextual reflection on art itself: words, works and public and private archival materials intertwine, creating a rhythm made up of pauses, silences, glances and reflections that expand from the private to the collective, traversing the social transformations from the second half of the twentieth century to the present day.
In this visual and poetic journey, Mimmo and Francesco reveal themselves through details, gestures and confessions that go beyond a simple biographical account. It is in the contrast between their voices and works that a dual perspective emerges, capable of transcending boundaries and transforming their art into a shared space: not to freeze reality, but to evoke the invisible and inner time, where the viewer becomes a participant through their gaze and interpretation.
