Nello Correale
Nello Correale is far more than a director; he is an architect of cinematic storytelling who has built his career at the intersection of philosophical thought and documentary practice. A graduate in Filosofia della Scienza from Milan, he has successfully transformed analytical rigor into a stylistic hallmark, propelling him into the elite of world cinema since the early 1990s.
His artistic standing is grounded in definitive achievements: he was a co-author of the screenplay for “Il Viaggio della speranza”, which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1991. This success was no isolated event; his screenwriting talent also earned the prestigious Grolla d’Oro for Maurizio Nichetti’s “Luna e l’altra”. As a director, he has collaborated with prominent Italian and international actors—including Luca Zingaretti, Iaia Forte, and Jennifer Driver—showcasing his work at major global film festivals from Miami to Cairo.
Correale’s transition into a pivotal figure in artistic direction is the natural evolution of a professional who has experienced cinema in all its forms. He gained an exhaustive knowledge of the industry by working alongside masters such as Giuseppe Bertolucci and Maurizio Nichetti, as well as on large-scale international productions, including those of Roger Corman. Since 2001, he has led the Festival Internazionale Cinema di Frontiera, a project that has redefined the concept of cinema as a tool for territorial and social cohesion.
He has also applied a scientific approach to the industry, publishing studies on the economic impact of film festivals and teaching cinematic language at prestigious institutions such as CISA in Locarno. Through his production company, Tipota Movie Company, he has managed for 25 years the production of works involving giants of the screen like Werner Herzog, Valeria Golino, and Valerio Mastrandrea. This dual expertise as both an auteur and a producer grants him a 360-degree understanding of what it means to curate an art festival today: building a cultural experience that is sustainable, authoritative and global in scope.
